Description: Carte de visite of General Benjamin Franklin Butler, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Butler was a very controversial general, who made a variety of decrees in New Orleans that drew criticism in both North and South. He heavily punished any anti-Union activity in occupied New Orleans, including perceived aid given to the Confederates by European diplomats. Butler was also one of the first generals to consider captured slaves as "contraband," refusing to return them to their owners under the Fugitive Slave Act; this provided them with at least a certain degree of freedom. Congress later mandated this practice. View on Ohio Memory.
