Description: Carte de visite of General Quincy Adams Gillmore, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. One of the best artillerists and engineers in the army, Gillmore was in charge of the taking of Fort Polaski, using the new rifled naval guns. He went on to command the Department of the South, which including the Carolinas, Florida, and Georgia. Gillmore insisted on integrating his command, and decreed that African-American troops should be given the same combat service as white regiments, rather than menial labor. The 54th Massachusetts, the famous African-American regiment, was under his command when they assaulted Fort Wagner, in Charleston, South Carolina. View on Ohio Memory.
