Description: Portrait of Emerson Opdycke, a native of Trumbull County, Ohio, created before the Civil War, ca. 1859 - 1860. He enlisted as a private in the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and rose to the rank of captain. Opdycke displayed great bravery at the Battle of Shiloh. ; promoted him to colonel and requested that Opdycke recruit and command the 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. This unit, known for its courage, was nicknamed "Opdycke's Tigers." View on Ohio Memory.
