Jeffrey Storage Battery Locomotives   Save
Jeffrey Manufacturing Company Collection
Description: 5-ton storage battery locomotives made by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Ohio in use at the Bunsen Coal Company in Universal, Indiana, 1915. In this photograph, the locomotives are at a charging station getting their batteries recharged. The batteries are under the raised lids of the locomotives. Battery-powered locomotives could be used in areas of mines where there were no electric trolley lines. For safety reasons, the U.S. Government only allowed battery-operated locomotives in mines where explosive gasses might be present. View on Ohio Memory.
