Description: Immaculata Church, Mount Adams / Mount Ida neighborhood, Cincinnati Ohio. Built 1859 for the German Catholic population of the area, from 1860 to present it has been a pilgrimage church. In 1977 it absorbed the nearby Irish parish of Holy Cross. Listed National Register of Historic Places (1978 -- #78002079). The WPA writers described the pilgrimage: "On Good Friday devout Catholics perform a colorful pilgrimage upseveral flights of steps from the foot of E. Third St. in self-communion, the 108 steps to the CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, Pavillion and Guido Sts., receive blessings from a fragment of the true cross, climb steps to the Holy Cross Monastery and Church, and pass reverently through the dim "grotto" beneath the church and then into the church. [...] Some of the pilgrims kneel and pray on each step." Reverse reads: "Good Friday pilgrimage, Cin'ti" View on Ohio Memory.
