Lunken Airport landing field, Cincinnati, Ohio   Save
Ohio Guide Photographs
Description: Situated about 3 miles southeast of downtown Cincinnati, Lunken Field (or Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport) served the area as the commercial airport in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. After a catastrophic flood in 1947, the commercial air traffic was moved to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport. The control tower at Lunken Field was nearly submerged by the Ohio River Flood in 1937. A black brick on the control tower marks the high water mark of that flood. It is the oldest standing control tower in the United States. In 1925 when the original 1,000 acre airport was dedicated, it was the largest municipal airport in the world. American Airlines was started at Lunken Airport View on Ohio Memory.
