Description: Located 3 miles southeast of downtown Cincinnati, Lunken Field (or Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport) is owned by the City of Cincinnati. The airport is situated in the Little Miami River Valley, near Columbia, the first Cincinnati area settlement of 1788. At the dedication in 1925, the 1,000 acre airport was the largest municipal airport in the world. American Airlines was started at Lunken Field. After a catastrophic flood in 1947, commercial air traffic was moved to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport. In the 1937 Ohio River Flood, the control tower was nearly submerged. A single black brick indicated the high-water mark of that flood. It is the longest standing control tower in the United States. View on Ohio Memory.
