Description: Located 3 miles southeast of downtown Cincinnati, Lunken Field (or Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport) is owned by the City of Cincinnati. It was built in the Lower Miami River Valley near the site of Columbia the first settlement in the Cincinnati area in 1788. At the dedication in 1925, Lunken Field was the largest municipal airport in the world. It served the area from the 1920s to the 1940s. In 1937, the Ohio River Flood nearly submerged the control tower. A single black brick marks the spot of the high water mark. In 1947 another flood caused the commercial traffic to be moved the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport. The control tower at Lunken Field is the longest standing control tower in the United states.
