Ohio Guide Photographs
Description: Located 3 miles southeast of downtown Cincinnati, Lunken Field (or Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport) is owned by the City of Cincinnati. It is situated near the site of Columbia, the first Cincinnati area settlement of 1788. At the time of the dedication in 1925, Lunken Field was the largest municipal airport in the world. During the 1937 Ohio River Flood, the control tower was nearly submerged. A single black brick indicates the high water mark of that flood. In 1947 another Ohio River Flood caused the commercial air traffic to be moved to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport. The Lunken Field control tower is the longest standing control tower in the United States. View on Ohio Memory.
