Description: Original description reads: "Montgomery Co., Dayton, O. Ridgeleigh Terrace. Home of Chas. F. Kettering on Kettering Road. 5 1/2 m. S. of Dayton." Charles Franklin Kettering (1876-1958) was an engineer, inventor, and philanthropist. After graduating from The Ohio State University in 1904, he helped to develop the first electric cash register while working at the National Cash Register Company in Dayton. Kettering would go on to found his own company, Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (Delco), which would eventually be purchased by General Motors. Kettering continued to develop new technology for automobiles throughout his life, including spark plugs, leaded gasoline, the automatic transmission, and four-wheel brakes. Under his leadership as vice president, General Motors also developed diesel engines, safety glass, and the refrigerant Freon. Kettering's home was the first house in the United States to have air conditioning, through the use of Freon. View on Ohio Memory.
