Description: Original description reads: "Soldiers and Sailors Monument in campus of Ohio University, erected to the memory of the 2500 men sent from Athens county in the Civil War-Athens county which never had a draft." A plaque on the monument reads: "The people of Athens County erect this monument in memory of those who volunteered as soldiers and sailors in defense of the union and to perpetuate free government."
