Description: This photograph shows the memorial for Simon Kenton, in the Oak Dale Cemetery in Urbana. A large headstone for Happersett can be seen in the background. Simon Kenton (April 3, 1755 – April 29, 1836) was a famous United States frontiersman and friend of Daniel Boone, Simon Girty, Spencer Records and Isaac Shelby. He served as a scout during Lord Dunmore's War in 1774. He participated in a number of military engagements against the British and Indians during the American Revolution. In 1778, he joined George Rogers Clark on a successful expedition into the Illinois Country to attack British outposts as well as Indian settlements. That same year he accompanied Daniel Boone in an attack on the Shawnee Indians' settlement of Chillicothe near Oldtown, Ohio and returned to service under George Rogers Clark as a scout in 1779. In 1794 he served in the militia under General Anthony Wayne and fought at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. In 1798, he moved to Ohio,having formerly lived in Kentucky, became a Brigadier General in the Ohio Militia in 1805 and participated in the Battle of the Thames, Canada, during the War of 1812. Oak Dale Cemetery is located at 319 Patrick Avenue in Urbana. The 60-acre grounds, begun in 1856, is still in use. It holds two mausoleums, a gazebo and several historical monuments.
