Description: Owned by the city of Cincinnati, Lunken Field (or Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport) is about 3 miles southeast of downtown Cincinnati. Situated in the Little Miami River Valley near Columbia, the first Cincinnati area settlement in 1788, this airport served as a commercial airport from the 1920s to the 1940s. At the time of the dedication in 1925, the 1,000 acre airport was the largest municipal airport in the world. Following the catastrophic flooding of the Ohio River in 1947, the municipal airport was removed to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. After the control tower was nearly submerged by the Ohio River Flood of 1937, a black brick was placed on the tower to indicate the high-water mark. Description: Carte de visite portrait of Q.A. (Quincy Adams) Gillmore in military uniform. Gillmore (1825-1888) was an Ohioan who rose to the rank of major general during the Civil War. One of the best artillerists and engineers in the army, he was in charge of the taking of Fort Polaski, and went on to command the Department of the South, which including the Carolinas, Florida, and Georgia. Gillmore insisted on integrating his command, and decreed that African American troops should be given the same combat service as white regiments, rather than menial labor. The 54th Massachusetts, the famous African-American regiment, was under his command when they assaulted Fort Wagner, in Charleston, South Carolina.
