Description: General Ulysses S. Grant's funeral procession on Broadway, New York, New York, on August 8, 1885. A horse-drawn catafalque bearing the coffin of Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War general and the eighteenth president of the United States, moves down Broadway accompanied by an honor guard. Spectators, many of them holding umbrellas, line the street. Poles strung with wires bisect the image horizontally. The procession stretched for seven miles. Grant died July 23, 1885, in Mount McGregor, New York. In accordance with his wishes, his family selected Riverside Park in New York City as the site of his final resting place. Grant’s remains were interred in a temporary vault. Shortly after his death a newly organized grassroots organization, the Grant Monument Association, began accepting donations to fund the construction of a permanent memorial. Ninety thousand individuals collectively donated an estimated $600,000 to the fund its construction (the largest public fundraising effort at the time). The cornerstone was laid in 1891, and the memorial was completed six years later. More than one million people attended the parade and dedication ceremony of General Grant National Memorial (popularly known as Grant’s Tomb) on April 27, 1897. Julia Grant died on December 14, 1902, in Washington, D.C., and her remains were interred beside her husband's in a twin sarcophagus. Description: Engraved portrait of President Ulysses S. Grant, 1872. The engraving was made from an original portrait by Chappel. Born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant Ohio, in 1839 Grant entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, where a roster mistakenly listed his name as Ulysses Simpson. He was known as Ulysses S. Grant for the rest of his life. Grant served in the Mexican War, but was never happy with military life and resigned his commission in 1854. After unsuccessful attempts at farming and real estate, Grant moved to Galena, Illinois, where he worked in his father's leather shop. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he organized a company in Galena and later accepted command of the 21st Illinois Regiment. In August 1861, Lincoln made Grant brigadier general of volunteers. Grant came to national attention by capturing the Confederate Forts Henry and Donelson, the first major Union victories of the war. In spite of a devastating defeat at Shiloh, Grant won major victories at Vicksburg and Chattanooga. In 1864, Grant was made lieutenant general commanding all the armies of the U.S. In this position, Grant devised a concerted plan of action for all the Union armies. Although Grant lost to Confederate General Robert E. Lee in battle, other Northern armies were successful and weakened the Confederacy. He presided over General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Grant served as president from 1869-1877. Southern reconstruction was one of the major issues of Grant's presidency. He occasionally encouraged the process with the force of federal troops. Although Grant is considered to have been honest himself, he was surrounded by dishonest men, causing his administration to be marred with scandal. He was re-elected in 1872 and ran for a third time in 1880 but was unsuccessful. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows members of the Victory Garden Club of Columbus, Ohio, proudly displaying their harvest around 1944. The photograph was printed in the pamphlet "Manual for Company-Employee Gardens" by the National Victory Garden Institute. The pamphlet is 38 pages long and measures 6" x 9" (15.24 x 22.86 cm). During World War II (1941-1945), many people supplemented the food they had available for personal use by planting vegetable gardens, both to support the war effort and due to food shortages and rationing. The gardens were promoted widely by the government and industry, and were known as "victory gardens" due to their importance to the war effort. Gardens were planted during World War I as well, but were called "war gardens" until the end of the war, when the term "victory garden" came into use. View on Ohio Memory.
