Description: U-shaped fishhook was carved from an animal bone. One end has a sharp point, and the other end has a flared collar that is 5 mm in length. The collar served as a point of attachment for a fishing line. The bone is very pale brown in color. Item was excavated at Tuttle Hill in Independence Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Description: Large, complete shell-tempered ceramic vessel is dark gray and reddish yellow in color. The rim is notched, possibly with a finger. Below the rim is an applied strip, also notched. There is a slight narrowing at the neck. Shoulders are rounded. Long body tapers to a narrow base. Body exterior still shows evidence of coiling method; interior is smooth. Description: Photograph of Margaret Grey-Eyes "Mother" Solomon, last Wyandot Indian, ca. 1880. Her family lived on the Grand Reserve, the twelve-by-nineteen square mile reservation in what is now known as Wyandot County. She attended the first school on the reservation, established by missionary John Stewart. In July 1843, she, her first husband David Young and their children, were among the tribe members relocated to Kansas City, Kansas. She and her second husband, John Solomon, returned to live in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, around 1865. Margaret's work in the Wyandot community earned her the nickname "Mother Solomon." Description: Scene depicting an Archaic base camp along the Maumee River in northwest Ohio where several families band together to prepare for the upcoming winter. Men and women can be seen carving dugout canoes using stone axes, building fires, fishing and grinding nuts for food storage along the bank. The scene is based on archaeological research from Archaic sites including the Dupont, Raisch-Smith, and Weilnau. The size and configuration of the dugout pictured is based a specific find known as the Ringler dugout, discovered in a glacial bog near Ashland, Ohio. This painting comes from the "Ancient Ohio" art series, a series of six artworks showing the major archaeological periods from Ohio history. Description: Scene depicting an Early Woodland/Adena (2800-2000 B.P.) gathering at a ceremonial earthwork in the Hocking River Valley. The Adena people of this period constructed circular earthen enclosures which were used as sites for ceremonies and social events. A hunter can be seen holding spears and an atlatl as he oversees the ceremony taking place, with Adena men and women performing a ritual using wolf skins. In the distance can be seen the encampment which would be constructed for use during ceremonial periods until participants returned to their home settlements in the region. The large enclosure seen here is modeled on similar earthworks along the Hocking River in Athens County, Ohio.
