She has a ring on the third finger of her left hand (possibly an engagement or wedding ring or both). Her waist-length hair spills over her right shoulder, and the crown of her head is draped with what looks like strands of pearls. Around her hips she wears a decorative girdle (belt) made of diamond-shape segments. The mount of the original cabinet card bears the name and address of the photographic firm: "Gilbert and Bacon, 1030 Chestnut Street and 820 Arch Street, Philada." Gilbert & Bacon was a well-known firm located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Proprietors were photographers Charles M. Gilbert (b. ca. 1848) and William F. Bacon (ca. 1843-1900). It was in business from the 1874 (peak of the cabinet card's popularity) until ca. 1929. After Bacon's death in 1900, his son William operated the business the late 1920s. The identity of the sitter and the photographer have not been verified, although some information indicates that the photograph may have been taken by Reverend Henry Cooke. It's possible that confusion arose over the fact that Jay Cooke had a brother named Henry David Cooke, who was not a minister but a businessman and journalist. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated to the 1870s or 1880s, this advertising card features an embroidery company in Columbus, Ohio, photographed by Columbus photographer George C. Urlin. The reverse of the advertising card reads "The Samples of Work photographed on opposite side were made on the White Machine. All kinds of Embroidery done to order. The photographer may have been Reverend Henry E. Cooke (1857-1915), son of the prominent American banker and financier Jay Cooke (1821-1905). Henry E. Cooke acted as his family's historian and photographer. He created or compiled poetry, sketches, humorous anecdotes, and several thousand photographs that documented three generations of the Cooke family. Henry E. Cooke graduated from Princeton and had his first posting at Trinity Church in Manchester, New Hampshire. He later became the head of the Episcopal Church in San Francisco. After only a year, he returned to Ohio and eventually became head of the Church in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Esther Clarkson Russell (1863-1945) and had two children, Henry Eleutheros Cooke (Harry) and Russell Cooke. Gilbert & Bacon, the portrait studio established by Philadelphia photographers Charles M. Gilbert (b. ca. 1848) and William F. Bacon (ca. 1843-1900), operated ca. 1874-ca. 1929. The firm specialized in celebrity portraiture and photographed actors, baseball players, and members of high society. Following the death of Bacon in 1900, the firm continued in business under the management of Gilbert and Bacon's son Frank T. into the early 20th century. View on Ohio Memory.
