Description: Posed photograph of nine well-dressed adults in front of a large two-story frame hotel. This photograph was taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912. Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. A selection of the original glass plate negatives were exhibited for the first time in 2013 at the Ohio Historical Center. View on Ohio Memory.

The Kanawha Hotel is now an historic landmark, located in Elizabeth, West Virginia. Its construction dates to about 1800, and it was in operation from 1812 through 1928 before being sold as a private residence. Description: This photograph shows the an area of downtown Youngstown, Ohio centered on the intersection of North Front Street and South Phelps Street, with the rolling hills of the suburbs in the distance. The station for the Youngstown & Suburban Railway as well as the Pittsburgh, Libson & Western R.R. could be found 21 North Front Street, and is probably near the left side of the photograph. Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 30 West Front Street, is just visible at the bottom left corner of the photograph. The Falcon Bronze Company (left of center in the photograph), located at 218 South Phelps, was incorporated in 1895. The brass founders were manufacturers of brass, bronze, and copper castings for rolling mills, steel plants and blast furnaces. In front of Falcon Bronze is a sign for “Parking” for a “? ‘s Super Service Station” in the 100 block of West Front Street. The Hotel Ohio (also called The Ohio or Ohio Hotel), visible on the far right side of the photograph, has been a fixture in downtown Youngstown for at least a decade. In 1912, a new building was built with 400 rooms at 131 West Boardman Street at the southwest corner of South Hazel Street. Before 1947, the name was changed to the Pick-Ohio Hotel, and while having always been an excellent hotel, was now one of the Albert Pick Hotels; famous for hospitality and service and complete with convention and banquet facilities. Since the early 1980's, the building has been home to the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority. Renamed Amedia Plaza, the 12-story building, which houses YMHA’s corporate offices, also features 92 senior apartments managed by YMHA. Renovations costing $6 million dollars were completed in 2002 by architects Ricciuti Balog & Partners which replaced windows, lighting and plumbing, and updated the heating and cooling system, making the building more energy efficient. Description: Dated ca. 1930-1939, this photograph shows an Art Deco mural, painted by an unknown artist, in the "Rubber Room" at the Portage Hotel in Akron, Ohio. The mural depicts the manufacture of mechanical goods. The photograph's caption reads "... All lighting of murals is indirect from light troughs overhead which adds to the striking effect of the picture." This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.
