Description: Photograph from the Columbus Free Press showing a quartet of musicians performing at Oktoberfest, an annual event which takes place in the German Village neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The men wear traditional German costumes and stand next to a statue of King Gambrinus, a Flemish leader who is credited with the invention of beer. The statue originally stood outside of Gambrinus Brewery, which operated on the site from 1906 until 1974, and remained after the brewery was demolished. The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. Description: Illustration of the Jewish Synagogue located at the corner of Plum Street and Eighth in Cincinnati, from "Cincinnati, from 1800 to 1875, a condensed history of Cincinnati," by E. H. Austerlitz. The cornerstone for the Plum Street Temple was laid on May 12, 1865, and the completed building was dedicated on August 24, 1866. Designed by James Keyes Wilson, it is constructed in the Byzantine-Moorish style--one of only two such synagogues in the United States. The longtime leader of the synagogue was Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, and Plum Street Temple is closely associated with the founding of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in 1873, the Hebrew Union College in 1875, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis in 1889. Description: Illustration showing a Jew lighting the Sabbath candle, from "The Jewish Nation: Containing an Account of their Manners and Customs, Rites and Worship, Laws and Polity," by D.P. Kidder, 1850. Jews have lived in Ohio from the state's creation in 1803. Before the American Civil War, however, the number of Jews residing in Ohio remained small. During this period, Cincinnati was the largest city in Ohio and the center of the Jewish community in the state, though it was not until 1824 that Jews in Cincinnati established their first congregation. Illustrating the small Jewish population in Ohio during this period, only forty thousand Jews lived west of the Appalachian Mountains by 1850 and only 150,000 Jews lived in the entire United States by 1870. The lighting of the candle shortly before sunset on Friday nights to usher in the Jewish Sabbath is a weekly tradition in many Jewish homes. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: In this photograph, Italian immigrant Florindo Dipinto operates his tool-grinding cart on the sidewalk in Cleveland, Ohio, ca. 1950-1960. Dipinto immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1913 at age 17. He originally settled in Chicago where he learned the tool-grinding trade from his uncle, Vincenzo Fabrizio. After one year of working with his uncle, he was able to purchase his own tool-grinding cart. Before settling in Cleveland, he worked in a coal mine in Colorado; served briefly in the United States Army during World War I; operated his grinding cart in Youngstown, Ohio, and returned to Italy where he served in the Army and met his wife Maria. Between 1927 and 1961, Dipinto operated his grinding cart in Cleveland, sharpening tools for a variety of customers. He retired in 1961 and passed away in 1981. The grinding cart is part of the Ohio Historical Society museum collections. View on Ohio Memory.

This photograph was to be included in the Cleveland Guide, one of several guides on selected American cities to be published by the Federal Writers Project. The Federal Writers Project (FWP) was a depression-era program created to employ writers. Most of the work for the Cleveland Guide was complete when the program was abolished in 1943. Description: This handmade two-wheeled cart used for sharpening knives and scissors was made in Chicago, Illinois, around 1910. The wooden frame is painted green and sits on two red wheels. Two handles at one end have a striped cloth seat between them. The top of the machine has several grinding stones on a metal rod. Wrapped around the rod is a belt attached to a large wheel in the center of the cart, which is operated by several foot pedals at the base. The cart was originally owned by Vincenzo Fabrizio, an Italian immigrant in Chicago. Fabrizio arranged for his nephew, Florindo DiPinto, to immigrate to the United States in 1913 when DiPinto was 17 years old. DiPinto learned the sharpening and grinding craft from his uncle on this cart. With this grinding cart, DiPinto sharpened such things as razors, knives, scissors, swords, saws, hedge trimmers and lawnmower blades. After a year, DiPinto purchased this cart from his uncle. In 1917, DiPinto moved to Youngstown from Chicago with this sharpening machine and pursued his trade there. In 1927, DiPinto moved to Cleveland with this machine and stayed active with it until his retirement in 1961. View on Ohio Memory.
