Description: Vignette photograph showing the Ohio Statehouse during the 19th century. The capitol building was built between 1839 and 1861 in the Greek Revival style, resembling the Parthenon in Greece. One of the best examples of Greek Revival civic architecture in the United States, it is also one of the oldest working statehouses in the nation. It is a masonry building, consisting largely of brick and Columbus limestone quarried from the west banks of the Scioto River. Seven architects worked on the project. The most notable is Nathan B. Kelly, who modified the building's plans to include heating and ventilation systems. Prisoners at the Ohio Penitentiary were used to complete portions of the construction of the building. High Street, Columbus, engraving  Save
Description: This engraving portrays High Street, Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1830. The street is wide and unpaved. The buildings on the right are the Neil House and the American Hotel. On the left is shown the United States Court House, the State Offices, and the Statehouse (third building on the left). A busy street then as now, High Street is shown to have many pedestrians as well as horse-drawn carriages and riders on horseback. The right side of the street, which includes the hotels, includes many buildings with awnings. The caption at the bottom of the image reads: "High Street, Columbus. On the right is seen the Neil House and the American Hotel; on the right, the U.S. Court House, the State Offices and State House." Made of stone and brick, the Statehouse in this image was constructed in 1816. The State Office building was built of brick with sandstone trim. The exterior of the Statehouse deteriorated badly, and in 1839 the cornerstone of the current Statehouse was laid. However, construction of the new Statehouse was not finished until 22 years later. The original Statehouse in Columbus burned on February 1, 1852. View on Ohio Memory.
