Youngstown Sheet and Tube Research Laboratory Photograph  Save
Description: This 8" by 10" (20.32 by 25.4 cm) image depicts Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company's research laboratory during the 1920s. At the time the company had research laboratories located in the coke plant, open-hearth department, Bessemer department, and the main office building. These labs tested the quality of the raw materials before they were used to make steel and the finished steel before it was shipped. They also analyzed samples to develop the proper composition of steel and iron needed to meet the special demands of customers. In addition, the labs monitored the quality of water brought into the plant for use as drinking water and in the manufacturing process. In 1921, researchers processed about 12,000 samples per month, providing approximately 40,000 separate results. In 1924 the company's research labs were renamed the metallurgy department. Researching a cow's stomach  Save
Description: Joe Munroe captures Dr. Wise Burroughs at work in this 1952 photograph. As a research scientist, Burroughs inspects the content of a cow's first stomach, the rumen, through a surgically-implanted hole in the stomach. From this, researchers can gain information on the digestion of certain materials by the cow. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work. View on Ohio Memory.

Judith Resnik conducting experiment photograph  Save
Description: This photograph of astronaut Judith Resnik working on an experiment was taken in May 1984. Resnik was preparing for a project aimed at separating large quantities of biological materials in space for ultimate use in pharmaceuticals. The experiment never took place in space, however, due to the tragic explosion of the space shuttle Challenger shortly after liftoff in 1986. Resnik (1949-1986) was born in Akron and graduated from Firestone High School. She earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1970, and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland in 1977. She began working at RCA as a design engineer in 1971 and was a biomedical engineer and staff fellow in the Laboratory of Neurophysiology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1974 to 1977. She was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1978. During her first mission in space, Resnik and the crew of the Discovery became known as "Icebusters" by successfully removing hazardous ice particles from the orbiter using the Remote Manipulator System. Resnik was killed during her second mission on January 28, 1986 when the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff. View on Ohio Memory.
