    Description: Hand-colored photograph of the USS Marietta with caption reading "U.S.S. Marietta, July 14, 1910, 12-19-17." There is a hand-written inscription on the lower left corner that reads "Dear Mrs. Schoonover, Your "Marietta" and my "Marietta" are quite different 'animiles'." On the lower right corner is written "USS Marietta, Built at the Union Ironworks, San Francisco, CA under the supervision of [not legible]." The USS Marietta was U.S. Navy gunboat commissioned in 1897. It was named for the city of Marietta in Washington County, Ohio. The Marietta served with the Pacific Squadron, then took a voyage around South America to join the Spanish-American War fleet near Cuba. After the Spanish-American War, the Marietta served in Asian, Caribbean, European and western Atlantic waters. During World War I, she performed convoy duties in the Atlantic Ocean. In July 1919 the Marietta was decommissioned by the U.S. Navy and sold in March 1920. View on Ohio Memory.

The Battle of Lake Erie took place on September 10, 1813, and Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry led the American fleet. Perry lost his flagship, the Lawrence, but continued the battle on the Niagara River. Commander Robert Heriot Barclay's surrender ended British control of the Great Lakes and allowed Perry to transport General William Henry Harrison's troops across Lake Erie to Canada. During his lifetime, he was an American Civil War veteran, minister, journalist, politician and historian. He was the first African-American to be elected to the Ohio State Legislature in 1880. From 1907-1909 she toured the world with fifteen other battleships from the Atlantic Fleet, which became known as the Great White Fleet. This voyage, which stopped at six continents and was manned by 14,000 sailors, was ordered by President Theodore Roosevelt as a display of American naval power. When she returned in 1909, she served in the Atlantic with both combat and training duties. She was a training vessel during World War I out of Norfolk, Virginia.       Ohio History Connection Use Agreement and Conditions of Reproduction

      1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
      2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
      3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
      4. Indemnification. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Ohio History Connection as described, the requestor agrees to hold harmless the OHC and its Trustees, Officers, employees and agents either jointly or severally from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or their heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.

        Warning concerning copyright restriction: The copyright law of the U. S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to a photocopy or reproduction.
