Description: Artillery weapons, which have been a primary weapon of war since before the Napoleonic Era, are usually rather large and require a crew to operate and to fire. Types of artillery include cannons, howitzers, field guns, and mortars. This particular piece of artillery equipment, photographed on the lawn of the Ohio Statehouse along High Street in downtown Columbus, Ohio, is a field gun. The High Street Photograph Collection is comprised of over 400 photographs of High Street in Columbus, Ohio, taken in the early 1970s. These photographs were taken primarily at street level and document people and the built environment from the Pontifical College Josephinum on North High Street in Worthington through Clintonville, the University District and Short North, Downtown and South Columbus. The photographs were used in a television photo documentary that aired on WOSU called "High Street." The regiment was called upon April 21, 1861 in a letter to Colonel James Barnett from the Governor, William Dennison. Each Battery of the 1st has its own history and operated independently in battle. Their initial appointment was for three months, though most served an additional campaign for three to five years. Battery H was quickly appointed to another 3 year campaign at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati and mustered into service November 7,1861. Major engagements in which the battery took part include Port Republic, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and the siege of Petersburg. The battery was mustered out at Camp Cleveland on June 14, 1865. Description: Brigade colors of the 158th Field Artillery Brigade of the 95th Infantry Division are shown on this flag. The red swallowtail pennant with white appliqued number "158" is a machine sewn applique. The flag is made of wool. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. Description: Painting of national colors of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery, Battery A. This silk Stars and Stripes guidon with gold fringe was taken into battle by Battery C of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery. Its blue canton once bore 35 stars in a grid of 5 columns and 7 rows but has since been torn away. Its fourth red stripe holds the remnants gold lettering which read: 1st Ohio Artillery Battery, A. The regiment was called upon April 21, 1861 in a letter to Colonel James Barnett from the Governor, William Dennison. Each Battery of the 1st has its own history and operated independently in battle. Their initial appointment was for three months, though most served an additional campaign for three to five years. Battery A was quickly appointed to another 3 year campaign at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati and mustered into service on September 9, 1861. Major engagements in which the battery took part include Mill Springs, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea. The battery was mustered out at Camp Cleveland on June 15, 1865. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Description: Taken in 1971 by U.S. Army medic Charles Tweel, this photograph shows a heavy artillery gun, with the tip of the barrel painted like an American flag and the words "Captain America" to the right. This photograph is part of the Charles Tweel Collection (AV 324) at the Ohio History Connection. Charles Tweel grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and attended The Ohio State University. After graduation in 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a non-combatant, first training as a medic at Fort Sam Huston, followed by nine months of additional training at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. He finished his training as a Specialist 3 and 91C, MOS, and went on to serve in Bamberg, Germany, with combat engineers for one year. In January 1971, Tweel served in Vietnam with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion (Air Mobile), 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, based out of Camp Evans near Phu Bai, north of Hue, until December of that year. Tweel spent most of his service on various firebases as the medic in charge, and occasionally shared firebases with South Vietnamese soldiers. He also visited MedCAP stations (Medical Civic Action Programs) where he treated civilians. Tweel received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement, and was promoted to Specialist 5 in 1971. After discharge from the Army, he went to medical school and was in private practice as a family practitioner from 1979-2016, and now works part-time in inner city medical clinics in Columbus, Ohio, and Charleston, South Carolina. Description: On the left is a Wool bunting Stars and Stripes bearing 34 stars in rows of 7-7-6-7-7. On the right is a gold silk guidon taken to battle by the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery. A horizontal line divides flag. Above the live are two crossed cannons and below it is the text: "LADY FLINT". These flags were not cataloged. The 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was mustered on September 15, 1862. The regiment was later reorganized as the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery on May 2, 1863. Companies from the regiment performed service in Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina before mustering out in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 25, 1865. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989.
