Description: This hand-sewn textile(wool) has a halyard rope. It is an American Red Cross flag which was flown on July 1, 1898 at the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. Description: This flag is a textile(wool) with vertical blue (hoist side), white, and red stripes of equal width and a leather fastening. This flag was donated by Lieutenant Mildred Hindman of Columbus, Ohio in 1947. Flags of this design have been used since the fall of Napoleon (the start of the Bourbon Restoration) in 1815. Blue and red are associated with France's capital city, Paris, and patron saint, the Virgin Mary. Description: The flag is made of the textile (wool), with 43 stars. The flag measures 140 by 210 cm. It is the first American flag raised on La Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico. As part of an island group in the Caribbean Sea often referred to as the Spanish Virgin Islands, Vieques lies 8 miles east of the Puerto Rican mainland. It has been regarded as the sister island to Puerto Rico hence, nicknamed Isla Nena. Description: This Imperial Chinese flag dates from 1890 to 1911. The wool flag depicts a blue five-toed dragon reaching for a red sun on a yellow rectangular field. The halyard edge is pink. An attached tag has been torn in half; the remaining portion reads "Lt. Gen CH / China / Re / 19." If complete, the tag would likely read "Lieutenant General Chaffee / China / Relief / 1900." Lieutenant General Adna Romanza Chaffee (1842-1914) acquired this flag during his service in the Boxer Rebellion. Alcott Farrar Elwell of East Hebron, New Hampshire, donated this flag to the Ohio Historical Society in 1962. From 1899-1901, the Chinese Society of Right and Harmonious Fists launched an uprising against foreign influences in China. Westerners referred to members of the society as "Boxers" because they practiced martial arts and calisthenics. Targets of the Boxers' violence were foreign builders, diplomats and Christians, both foreign and Chinese. The United States and other countries with interests in China sent troops to rescue their citizens who were under siege in the legation compound of Beijing (then Peking). This international force, known in the United States as the China Relief Expedition, suppressed the rebellion and imposed reparations on China. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: On the left is a Wool bunting Stars and Stripes bearing 34 stars in rows of 7-7-6-7-7. On the right is a gold silk guidon taken to battle by the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery. A horizontal line divides flag. Above the live are two crossed cannons and below it is the text: "LADY FLINT". These flags were not cataloged. The 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was mustered on September 15, 1862. The regiment was later reorganized as the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery on May 2, 1863. Companies from the regiment performed service in Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina before mustering out in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 25, 1865. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Photographs of the flags and the paintings are now part of the society's archival collections. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This Blue Star banner was donated by Miss Augusta Panhorst of Marietta, Ohio in 1969. It has a red border, a white field with one blue star appliqued on it. It was hemmed by hand. It is a rectangular flag, measuring 45.5 by 35.5 cm. The In Service Flag (Blue Star Banner) was patented by an Ohioan, Colonel Robert L. Queisser of East Cleveland, Ohio, on 6 November 1917. Intended for display by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces, blue star banners are also displayed in shop windows to honor the members of that organization serving. Most flags were homemade by mothers, though they later became mass-produced. Upon death in service the blue star was replaced by a gold one, wounded soldiers were represented by silver. One of the most famous flags was that of the five Sullivan brothers who all perished on the U.S.S. Juneau. Miss Augusta Panhorst of Marietta, Ohio, donated this item in 1969. View on Ohio Memory.
