Description: This cabin was the birthplace of Civil War general and United States President Ulysses S. Grant. A sign on the top of the cabin reads "General Grant was born in this House." The cabin was built in Point Pleasant, Clermont County, Ohio, but after the Civil War made an extensive tour of the United States on a railroad flatcar. It was then displayed at the Ohio State fairgrounds in Columbus and returned to Point Pleasant in 1936. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This color image shows a view of the business district of Chardon, Ohio, ca. 1960-1969. The perspective is looking toward the street from Chardon Square Park. In the center foreground of the image is a raised platform around which is a ring of lampposts. Chardon Courthouse Square District was added to National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Chardon was designated the county seat of Geauga County in 1808. On July 25, 1868, the entire village business district (now Main Street) was destroyed by fire, including forty businesses, offices, meeting halls, and the 1824 courthouse. Citizens immediately rallied and formed the Chardon Building Company. In August 1868 they contracted with Herrick and Simmons of Cleveland to build the Union Block using fire-resistant brick. This was one of Rensselaer R. Herrick's (Cleveland's mayor, 1879-1882) last construction jobs. The Union Block occupies the northern half of this block of Main Street. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The Photo is of downtown New Philadelphia. Several historic buildings are noticeable especially the County Courthouse near the center of the photo. Residents named the town after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Once formed in 1804. One of the principal reasons for this quick growth was New Philadelphia's location on the Ohio and Erie Canal, making the community an important trading center. Over the next several decades, New Philadelphia's status as a trading and manufacturing center continued to expand, especially following the completion of two railroads through the community. In 2000, many of New Philadelphia's 17,056 residents worked in retail sales, although several also found employment in service industries, and a few people still worked in mining. Several residents commuted to Canton, in nearby Stark County, to find employment. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This color images shows the entrance to the Mathews House, a historic building now located on the campus of Lake Erie College, Painesville, Ohio. Three steps lead to the front door, which is framed by two side lights and topped by a fanlight with ornamentation (difficult to see in this image). The famed master architect and builder Jonathan Goldsmith (1783-1847) designed and built this well-proportioned Greek Revival residence for Dr. John H. Mathews (1785-1862), the first physician in Painesville, Ohio. The house also served as the first hospital in that community. It is considered to be one of the finest Goldsmith houses. The house was moved to its present location on the campus of Lake Erie College from its original North State Street site in 1949. Lake Erie College is on the National Register of Historic Places. Dr. John Henry Mathews married Martha Devotion Huntington, daughter of Samuel H. Huntington, third governor of Ohio. According to the Western Reserved Historical Society, Dr. Mathews was an abolitionist and suspected member of the Underground Railroad. View on Ohio Memory.
