The Strobridge plant was founded by Elijah Middleton and at one time was one of America's most important lithography firms. They mostly produced circus, theater, and movie posters, but by the time of the Great Depression the company turned to movie posters, becoming one of the pioneers in that area of advertising. Description: This is a photograph of an advertisement for the new Ohio Bank Building at the corner of Madison Avenue and St. Clair Street in Toledo, Ohio. The flier boasts that the 368 foot tall building features marble drinking fountains, ample restrooms, the American District Telegraph Service, and the constant security of a watchman. The Ohio Bank Building was completed in 1932. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: United States Road handbill, 1819. The notice is a request for bids from contractors interested in working on the National Road (also called the Cumberland Road or the U.S. Road), the first federally sponsored roadway. The notice states that David Shriver, Jr., superintendent of the National Road, is accepting bids for construction of the road segment that would link Uniontown and Washington, Pennsylvania. The U.S. Congress commissioned the National Road in 1806 as a conduit to the West, linking the Potomac River and Cumberland, Maryland, to St. Louis, Missouri, and the Mississippi River. The road opened Ohio and the Northwest Territory to settlement and trade with the eastern U.S. By 1838 the Cumberland Road had reached Springfield, Ohio; three years later it reached Vandalia, Illiinois, where construction stopped due to a funding shortfall. By this time the railroads attracted travelers and business shipping away from the National Road, and the project was abandoned. A century later the advent of the automobile made the National Road popular once again. The National Road bisected Ohio along what is now U.S. 40. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This pewter figurine depicts the "Yellow Kid," the first popular color newspaper comic in the country. Richard Felton Outcault (1863-1928) of Lancaster, Ohio created the "Yellow Kid" comic about a mischievous Irish boy named Mickey Dugan. The comic strip lasted only from 1896 until 1898, but during that period the public could not get enough of him. It appeared in the New York newspapers several times a week and on Sundays. The popularity of the cartoon led to a new type of merchandising using cartoon characters. Images of the "Yellow Kid" were printed on products ranging from soap to whiskey. The figurine measures 2.36 by 4 inches (6 by 10.2 cm). Richard Felton Outcault studied at McMicken University School of Design in Cincinnati. He worked as an illustrator for Edison Laboratories. Outcault also created the "Buster Brown" cartoon series. Printed in yellow ink, the "Yellow Kid" cartoon debuted in Joseph Pulitzer's New York World. It lent its name to "yellow journalism," a form of reporting popular in the late nineteenth century in which sensationalized stories that focused on crime, scandal, entertainment, and catastrophes were common.
