Description: Trips into town were infrequent, often just once a week, and it was important to look your best. This photograph by Joe Munroe shows a young farm boy unhappy with his mother's decision to try and clean him up before their Saturday trip into town for shopping and a movie. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work. Description: This photograph shows Anges Yancura smiling and sitting in a canoe, probably taken in Akron, Ohio, in the late 1930s. The caption for the photograph reads "Agnes Yancura 2267 SW 5th St." This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

The National Youth Administration was one of Roosevelt's New Deal agencies and operated from 1935 to 1943 as part of the Works Progress Administration. Several people swim and play at the pond near Hinckley Reservoir in the Cleveland Metropolitan Park System in 1940. There is a dam behind the swimmers and people standing on shore. The reservoir is now known as Hinckley Reservation, but is still operated by the Cleveland Metropolitan Park System. The majority of the reservation is made up of 90-acre Hinckley Lake, which in addition to swimmers and sunbathers, is enjoyed by ice fishermen and skaters in the winter months. View on Ohio Memory.
