Description: Caption reads: "Wm. H McGuffey Home. Mt. Auburn." William Holmes McGuffey, who was from Tuscarawas County, Ohio, was a professor at Miami University from 1826 to 1836. Between 1836 and 1845 he served as president of three Ohio institutions: Cincinnati College, Ohio University and Woodward College in Cincinnati. In 1845 McGuffey became a professor at the University of Virginia, where he taught until his death in 1873. Description: Caption reads "The Bazaar. Erected by Mrs. Trollope, 1828-9; Demolished in March, 1881. Cincinnati building." Mrs. Frances Trollope was an English novelist with a caustic wit, who moved with her family in 1827 from Bristol to the utopian community Nashoba Commune in Tennessee. The community failed the family then moved to Cincinnati in February 1828. In an effort to support her family, she opened a grand emporium called The Bazaar, which was located at the 411 East Third Street, on the south east corner of Third Street and Broadway in Cincinnati. The Bazaar, however, was not a success and her and her family left Cincinnati in March 1830 and returned to England. In 1830, a music and dancing academy was opened in the building, having renovated it for their purposes, and in 1840, the building was occupied by the Physio-Medical school. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph (ca.1935-1943) is of an engraving of a scene on the west side of Main Street, between Fourth and Fifth Streets, in Cincinnati. It shows the Gibson House, as well as a General Rail Road Ticket Office, an Omnibus Office, and U.P. James, Publisher & Bookseller. Gibson House opened in 1849 by J.K. and D.V. Bennett. Artist William A. Thien painted many wall decorations and frescoes in the interior of the hotel. Considered the "best house in the city" for a time, it was often used for celebrations and to greet VIPs visiting Cincinnati, including Rutherford B. Hayes, in 1877. In 1899, a newspaper article announced that a firm in Chicago was finalizing plans for construction of a more modern facility, to be located in the same place as the earlier structure.
