Description: Dr. William Awl was born on May 24, 1799, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He studied medicine at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and throughout his career sought to improve medical care for the imprisoned, the blind, and the mentally ill. Awl helped organize the Ohio Medical Association. This organization lobbied the Ohio legislature to establish a state hospital for the mentally ill and a school for the blind. He was the first physician at the Lunatic Asylum in Columbus and served as its director until 1850. He died on November 19, 1876. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Illustration showing the Medical College of Ohio, 1835. Daniel Drake founded the Medical College of Ohio in 1819 in Cincinnati. Prior to the Medical College's establishment, most doctors learned their vocation through an apprenticeship system. Drake hoped to bring some of the finest doctors in the United States to Cincinnati to provide students with multiple perspectives on the practice of medicine. He also hoped that a diverse faculty would encourage discussion of medical practices and improve patient care. In 1896, the Medical College of Ohio merged with the University of Cincinnati, and later changed its name to the College of Medicine of the University of Cincinnati. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Employee clinic at the F. & R. Lazarus Company, located on the second floor of the building at South Front and West State Streets, 1948-1950. Between 1851 and 1965, the F & R Lazarus Company retail store dominated the trade and physical landscape of Columbus. The company rose from its early years as a men's clothier in a 20 x 40 foot room downtown, to its position by 1965 as a member of the largest department store chain, Federated Department Stores. Lazarus' growth reflects that of the capital city; from small beginnings through a "golden age" of downtown development, and eventually branching out into the surrounding countryside. In 2003, the Lazarus Company was incorporated with Macy's, a member of the Federated Department stores, and is no longer in existence. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This illustration depicts the Bacon Building at the Academy of Medicine, which was founded on the northwest corner of Walnut and Sixth Streets in Cincinnati. The illustration appears in "The Cincinnati Journal of Medicine, Centennial Issue," published in 1957. Cincinnati physicians established the Academy of Medicine in 1857. It served primarily as a social and educational club for local physicians. Members met together to share knowledge, to establish standards for medical education, and to debate medical treatments for various illnesses affecting the community. The Academy of Medicine has continually operated since the 1850s. In 2003, the organization provided local residents with a physician's referral service, public lecturers, and health information telephone line. The Academy of Science, which originally only allowed men to join, eventually formed a women's auxiliary. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Mary Ann Bickerdyke was a nurse and health care provider for the Union Army during the Civil War. She was born on July 19, 1817, near Mount Vernon, Ohio. After attending Oberlin College, she studied nursing in Cincinnati. During the Civil War, Bickerdyke traveled with the armies of Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, treating wounded soldiers, setting up field hospitals, and working as an agent for the United States Sanitary Commission. After the war was over, she assisted Union veterans with legal issues and helped them secure their pensions. Bickerdyke died on November 8, 1901, in Bunker Hill, Kansas. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated ca. 1850-1859, this is an ambrotype photograph of the Cleveland Sanitarium in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cleveland State Hospital was authorized by an act of the Ohio legislature in 1852. It was the second state psychiatric hospital for long-term care created in Ohio. The location of the main building, completed in 1855, was in the township of Newburgh. In the spring of 1973 a special task force of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation began planning and implementing the discontinuation of inpatient care at the hospital. Cleveland State Hospital was completely phased out by the end of June 1974. By that time, the patients had been gradually transferred to other institutions. The old main building on Turney Road was demolished in 1977. View on Ohio Memory.
