Description: The blue swallowtail Brigade Colors flag of the 165th Infantry Brigade, 83rd Infantry division which was organized late into World War I. The organization date was 25 August 1917 at Camp Sherman, Ohio and demobilized 12 February 1919 at Camp Sherman, Ohio. It is now a training unit of the United States Army. The blue flag was made of wool with white numbers made of cotton. The 165 at the top and the 83 at the bottom were machine sewn appliques. The flag measures 121 cm high. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Guidon of the 191st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion of the 37th Infantry Division composed of two triangles pieced together on a descending diagonal. The top triangle is red with the text "191" appliqued in gold. The bottom triangle is gold with the text "AAA" appliqued in red. Its gold fringe is 5 cm long with self-plied loops. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Brigadier General Leo Kreber's Colors, 37th Infantry Division  Save
Description: Colors of Brigadier General Leo E Kreber, 37th Infantry Division Artillery. This red wool flag has a white star charge indicating rank. Born in Ohio in 1896, Kreber entered West Point in 1915, graduating a year early in 1918 at the outbreak of World War I. In 1936 he took command of the 136th Field Artillery Regiment. In 1940 he took command of the 37th's artillery (an Ohio National Guard division) . During World War II, the 37th's (the "Buckeye Division") Pacific campaigns included Fiji Islands, Guadalcanal, Munda, Bougainville, Luzon Campaign, and Manila. Kreber received the Silver Star, a Purple Heart, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit. In January 1949, Governor Lausche appointed Kreber to Ohio Adjutant General, giving him the two top positions in the Ohio National Guard, which he would hold until mobilization in 1952. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. Description: Infantry flag painted by Robert Needham in the 1960s. Silk flag of the national colors served as the camp colors of the 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The flag in this painting was manufactured in the United States between 1863 and 1865 as separate front and back pieces that were sewn together. The 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio and mustered into service on August 19, 1862. The regiment took part in the siege of Knoxville, the Atlanta Campaign, and the battles of Franklin and Nashville. The regiment was mustered out at Camp Harker, Tennessee, on June 15, 1865. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. The flag was manufactured in the United States between 1861 and 1863. There are 34 painted stars arranged in concentric circles with an additional star in each of the blue canton's four corners. The flag has thirteen alternating red and white stripes. The original flag measured 64 by 80 cm. The 40th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio, and mustered into service on December 7, 1861. Major engagements in which the regiment took part include Middle Creek, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Mission Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign, and Franklin. On December 10, 1864, after the battle of Franklin, the regiment was consolidated with the 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989.   1. One-Time Use. The right to reproduce materials held in the collections of the Ohio History Connection is granted on a one-time basis only, and only for private study, scholarship or research. Any further reproduction of this material is prohibited without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  2. Use Agreement. Materials are reproduced for research use only and may not be used for publication, exhibition, or any other public purpose without the express written permission of the Ohio History Connection.
  3. Credit. Any publication, exhibition, or other public use of material owned by the Ohio History Connection must credit the Ohio History Connection. The credit line should read “Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection” and should include the image or call number. The Ohio History Connection appreciates receiving a copy or tearsheet of any publication/presentation containing material from the organization’s collections.
  4. Indemnification.
