Description: This image shows the front exterior of the school that Ulysses S. Grant attended as a boy living in Georgetown, Ohio. The view of the one-story structure, located at 508 South Water Street, shows two front entrances and two chimneys at either end Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, in April 1822. In 1823 his parents moved twenty miles east to Georgetown, where his father opened a tannery. Ulysses worked in his father's tannery, and from the ages of about six to thirteen, he attended classes in the little schoolhouse on Water Street. The building, built in 1829, consisted of only one room at that time. The teacher was John White, whom Grant mentioned in his memoirs. Later Grant attended an academy in Maysville, Kentucky, for a year, and then John Rankin's academy at Ripley for a year. His father then succeeded in getting him appointed to West Point where, through a bureaucratic error, his name was listed as Ulysses Simpson Grant. The information written on the back of the original photograph reads: "Caption. Ulysses S. Grant Schoolhouse, Georgetown, Photograph by Gertrude Shockey. This photo must be returned to OHIO WRITERS' PROJECT #8 E. Chestnut St., Columbus, Ohio." The old Grant Schoolhouse at Georgetown O. as it looks today, having been erected in 1804 as nameplate verifies. Gen. and Pres. The photo is from the Ohio Post Office Artwork Collection, AV 48. The collection represents thirty murals or plaster reliefs installed in twenty-five Ohio post offices between 1937 and 1943. In 1988, Connie Girard photographed the artwork. Photos were published in the article “Not By Bread Alone, Post Office Art of the New Deal.” Timeline. June-July 1989, p. 2-19 by Gerald Markowitz and Marlene Park. In 1932, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected President he promised Americans a "New Deal" and created public works programs to provide jobs for the millions of unemployed people, including artists. Ten thousand unknown and established artists were commissioned by the government to create murals, paintings, photographs, posters, prints and sculpture. The goal was not only to employ artists, but also to bring fine art into the daily lives of all people. The Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) was funded for six months in 1933 – 1934. The PWAP was succeeded by the Treasury Department’s Section of Painting and Sculpture. Organized in 1934 the Section of Painting and Sculpture operated until 1943. Under the auspices of this organization sixty-six new Ohio post offices received artwork. The majority of the post offices were located in small towns. Post offices were chosen as a location for artwork because, particularly in small towns, they were centers of community activity. Most of the painted murals or murals in plaster relief created are realistic images reflecting the history, common activities or major industries of the communities in which the post offices are located. Description: Photograph showing a fire hydrant painted in red, white and blue for the United States Bicentennial in May 1976, with a top hat resting on top. The image was submitted by photographer Ralph Miller in the Amateur category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. Miller also provided the following information: "Taken on North Green Street, Georgetown, Ohio, May, 1976. The Young Citizens of Georgetown painted all fireplugs in the Bicentennial theme. This one is across the street from my home. Our town was beautifully restored for the Bicentennial. Come see & enjoy it." In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Description: The Grant Boyhood Home in Georgetown, Ohio, was the home of Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United States, from 1823, when Grant was one year old, until 1839. Ulysses Grant lived in this home longer than any other house during his lifetime. While growing up there, Grant — born Hiram Ulysses Grant — went to school, worked in his father’s tannery across the street and spent hours in his favorite pastime: working with horses. Grant lived in Georgetown with his parents and four siblings until 1839, when he left to attend West Point. Description: This image shows the side facade of the Brown County Courthouse. This is one of the oldest surviving courthouses in Ohio and is the focal point of Georgetown, Ohio, the county seat. The Greek Revival building was constructed from 1849-1851 by architect Hubbard Baker, and transverse wings were added to the building in 1914. Despite a 1977 fire that almost destroyed the building, it remains intact. The courthouse is part of the Georgetown Historic District and is surrounded by early Federal style houses.
