Description: Three photographs document the German Cultural Garden in Cleveland, Ohio. The third view is of the Goethe-Schiller statue, dedicated to two of Germany's greatest poet-philosophers. The statue originally stood in Wade Park. The Ihna Thayer Frary Audiovisual Collection was given to the Ohio Historical Society by Mr. Frary in two sections. One was in March of 1963 and the remainder in May of 1965 by his sons, Dr. Spencer G. and Allen T. Frary following their father's death. I.T. Frary (1873-1965) was the publicity and membership secretary for the Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. He taught for many years at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Western Reserve University's School of Architecture. He did much research of Ohio and American architecture and was the author of seven major works and numerous scholarly articles on architectural and art history. Description: Photograph from the Columbus Free Press showing a quartet of musicians performing at Oktoberfest, an annual event which takes place in the German Village neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The men wear traditional German costumes and stand next to a statue of King Gambrinus, a Flemish leader who is credited with the invention of beer. The statue originally stood outside of Gambrinus Brewery, which operated on the site from 1906 until 1974, and remained after the brewery was demolished. The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. Description: Photograph of a Hoster Brewery delivery truck, ca. 1910. The L. Hoster Brewing Company was founded on S. Front Street in Columbus, Ohio, in 1836. The original owners were businessman Louis Hoster along with Jacob Silbernagel and G. M. Herancourt, whom Hoster later bought out. The company continually increased beer production until they were putting out over 300,000 barrels a year by the turn of the century. In 1904 Hoster joined a consolidated group of Columbus breweries to form the Hoster-Columbus Associated Breweries Co., whose German-style beers remained popular until the company was shut down in 1919 due to Prohibition. Description: Engraved plaque reading, "This tablet marks the birthplace of the first white child born in the Moravian Mission House at Gnadenhutten; John Lewis Roth born July 4 1773 died Sept 25 1841 Buried at Bath PA.; Erected by The Ohio Society Daughters of the American Colonists 1934." John Lewis Roth is believed to be the first white child born in Ohio. Near New Philadelphia in Tuscarawas County is a partial reconstruction of an 18th century Delaware Indian mission. The Ohio Historical Society acquired the property in 1923 and reconstructed the site from 1927 to 1930. Today Gnadenhutten is marked by a 37-foot-high monument and a small museum, along with a reconstructed cabin and a cooper's shop. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This portrait shows William Bimeler (1876-1929), resident of Zoar, Ohio, posing with a cornet. He is wearing a cap and what likely is a band uniform. He was a descendant of Joseph Bimeler, founder of the religious separatists known as Zoarites. These separatists were originally from an area of Germany known as Wurttemburg. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, they had separated from the official German religion, the Lutheran Church. Separatists faced severe persecution in Wurttemburg, including confiscation of their properties and imprisonment. Joseph Bimeler (sometimes spelled "Bäumeler) decided to bring the Separatists to the United States. They arrived in Philadelphia with few resources. The Quakers (Society of Friends) in Philadelphia helped the separatists to find jobs and eventually loaned them the money to buy land in eastern Ohio, where they established the small community of Zoar in Tuscarawas County in 1818. The inspiration for the town's name was found in the Book of Genesis, which includes the story of Lot, who escaped to Zoar from Sodom. In Zoar the group established a communal society. Both male and female members of the community signed the Articles of Association, which created the Society of Separatists of Zoar on April 15, 1819. The Articles were revised in 1824 and in 1833 the Society was incorporated. Bimeler continued as one of the Zoarites' leaders until his death in 1853. Although the society struggled at first, it soon became economically prosperous. By the time of Bimeler's death, Zoar's wealth was more than one million dollars. In keeping with the Zoarites’ German heritage, making music was one of the community’s pastimes. Zoar had an orchestra and a brass band. After Bimeler's death, however, the society of Zoar began to decline. Although the community was still economically prosperous, the members' commitment to the society's original goals began to deteriorate in the second half of the nineteenth century. Over time, many of the original residents died. The younger generation did not have memories of the persecution back in Europe or of the society's early struggles in Ohio. The outside world increasingly influenced the Zoarites, as strangers visited Zoar and stayed in the town's hotel. In 1898 the remaining members decided to dissolve the society, and they divided up the community's property. Throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Zoar has continued to exist as a small town in rural eastern Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Haltnorth's Garden was a German beer garden that also hosted light opera performances in an outdoor covered theater. The signs on either side of the gate advertise regular concerts on Thursdays and Sundays, or Fridays in case of inclement weather, while the name of the proprietor, Charles Hogg, dates this photograph to between 1879 and 1887. Baus, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, was born in 1875. He began his career as a professional photographer doing studio work before becoming a staff photographer for the Cleveland Advocate in 1911. Baus worked for the paper, which was later purchased by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, for thirty-eight years until his death in 1949. He was also an avid collector of historic photographs. The Louis Baus Collection consists of over one thousand photographs mounted in eleven albums, showing historic Cleveland, the village of Zoar and Ohio covered bridges and mills. View on Ohio Memory.
