Description: Located Walnut St., between Fifth and Sixth Sts., Fountain Square, B. F. Keith's Theater occupied the site of a theater built on a Fountain Square alley in the 1880s. A Fountain Square Theater by James W. McLaughlin occupied the site from 1892 to 1899. J. M. Wood's Columbia Theater moved the entrance to Walnut St. in 1909. Keith's, an 18-story tower by Rapp and Rapp of Chicago, replaced the Columbia in 1921. Redevelopment of Fountain Square in the 1960s demolished the building entirely. Maple syrup season begins in January, ending around April in Ohio, and while trees are tapped all over the state, Geauga County has some of the state's best, hosting the state's Maple Syrup Festival every spring. Traditionally, maple syrup is harvested by tapping a maple tree through the bark and into the wood, then letting the sap run into a bucket, which requires daily collecting. Less labor-intensive methods, such as the use of continuous plastic pipelines, have since superseded this in all but cottage-scale production. It takes approximately 10 gal.of sap to be boiled down to 1 quart of syrup, and a mature sugar maple produces about 10 gal. of sap during the 4- to 6-week sugaring season under gravity, but can produce 20 or more gallons under vacuum. Trees are not tapped until they have a diameter of 10 in. at chest-height and the tree is at least 40 years old. If the tree is more than 18 in., it can be tapped twice on opposite sides. Description: Caption reads: "Third Street Bridge 1898, Dayton, Ohio, Montgomery County." Ohio has a large number of covered bridges, falling second only to Pennsylvania in quantity. Within the state of Ohio, Fairfield County and Ashtabula County lead the state in containing the most original covered bridges. The company advertised on the side of the bridge, M. Ohmer's Sons Co., had a furniture store located on the corner of Main and Second Streets in Dayton, Ohio in 1857. A family furniture business, the company was restructured and renamed M. Ohmer's Sons Co. in 1878 upon the retirement of father Michael and purchase by son John Francis. The company specialized in ornate, solidly built white oak furniture, supplying the furniture for many government buildings, including the furnishings for the Wood County Courthouse in 1895 and the Supreme Court Justice Bench and legislator's desks for the Florida State Capitol in 1902. The company also manufactured furniture for households, offices, and banks, selling many types of wooden filing cabinets. M. Ohmer's Sons Co. disbanded in 1927. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: 6" x 7.5" photograph of an arithmetic board from a collection of models for the Ohio State School for the Blind. The arithmetic board, a solid wood frame, had indented pockets, into which fit the 24 hearts used to teach arithmetic problems. The heart figures were made of compressed wood and painted in a primary color in contrast with the board. The layout of four different lines of figures allowed instruction in multiplication, addition, subtraction or fractions. Other arithmetic boards had figures of crescents, diamonds, circles, squares and stars. The process of using arithmetic boards was similar to the use of paper and pencil, but units were more easily understood than their numerical symbol. The model dimensions: width 14", height 9.5". Photographs and descriptions of models were included in the book "Models for the Blind," compiled by workers of the Ohio Writers' Program. The book was meant as a guide, to be used in the building and study of models, and as documentation of the achievements at the Ohio State School for the Blind. The models were a result of research, design and construction by employees of the Works Projects Administration. Models were made of durable materials to withstand regular usage. The average cost of labor for larger models was $45. A special room was built to store the models where teachers could borrow them to be used in classroom instruction. In 1837, the Ohio government established the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind. This institution was the predecessor of the Ohio State School for the Blind. It was the first public school for the blind in the United States. It was the first in the nation to be created and maintained entirely by the State government. The school opened its doors in 1839, and it was located in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Any blind children residing in Ohio could attend the institution. Eleven students enrolled at the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind this first year. The school initially had a maximum capacity of sixty students, but upon moving to a new building in 1874, more than three hundred students could attend at one time. Between 1839 and 1901, 2,058 students enrolled at the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind, with 339 attending in 1901 alone. In the early 1900s, the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind became known as the Ohio State School for the Blind, and the Ohio Department of Education assumed control of the school. In 1953, the school moved ten miles north of its original location to its present home. In 2005, 126 students enrolled in the Ohio State School for the Blind. Students as young as three and as old as twenty-one years of age attended the school. Students could receive their entire education (kindergarten through high school) at the institution. Description: This photograph shows the interior of the Ohio governor's office, ca. 1935. This room was the original site of the governor's office in the State Office Building, Columbus, Ohio. The office walls feature gleaming panels of inlaid wood, some in a herringbone pattern. The room is furnished with a desk, two office chairs, an armchair, and a sofa, all of them characteristically streamlined yet stylish. Two windows have patterned, tieback draperies. Construction of the building began in 1930 and was completed in 1933. The 14-story, white marble structure was designed by Cincinnati architect Harry Hake and serves as a classic example of the Art Moderne style. The interior of the building includes public spaces decorated with murals, mosaics and bas-reliefs that illustrate the history of Ohio and its industries. The building was later known as the Ohio Judicial Center until 2011, when the state Supreme Court named the center in honor of the late Chief Justice Thomas Moyer, who was the second-longest-serving chief justice in state history at the time of his death in April 2010. Description: This photograph shows the remains of the Hotel Fetter after a fire in downtown Upper Sandusky, Ohio, in November 1918. Two fire-damaged buildings stand on either side of rubble. The sidewalk is roped off and still covered in bricks and wood. Two war posters, one with Uncle Sam reading, "I want you for the US Army," and one with a portrait of Woodrow Wilson reading, "Stand by the President," are hung in a shop window. All guests at the Hotel Fetter were safely evacuated and the staff had time to save the contents before the building caught fire. The fire caused two fatalities and $250,000 in damages overall. The Wyandot County Courthouse (the dome of which can be seen in the photo), was slightly damaged by smoke but otherwise unharmed by the fire. Photograph by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a traveling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas.
