Description: Illustration showing the Medical College of Ohio, 1835. Daniel Drake founded the Medical College of Ohio in 1819 in Cincinnati. Prior to the Medical College's establishment, most doctors learned their vocation through an apprenticeship system. Drake hoped to bring some of the finest doctors in the United States to Cincinnati to provide students with multiple perspectives on the practice of medicine. He also hoped that a diverse faculty would encourage discussion of medical practices and improve patient care. In 1896, the Medical College of Ohio merged with the University of Cincinnati, and later changed its name to the College of Medicine of the University of Cincinnati. View on Ohio Memory.

Miriam Kerruish Stage portrait  Save
Description: Portrait of Miriam Kerruish Stage of Cleveland, Ohio. Stage (1870-1929) was included on the "Ohio State Honor Roll" from the League of Women Voters of Ohio, ca. 1930, which listed prominent Ohio women involved in the suffrage movement. Her brief biography from the Honor Roll reads: "Miriam Kerruish Stage (Mrs. C. W.) graduated from Smith College, became a doctor, and practiced until her marriage. As a member of a family of liberals, she naturally identified herself with all liberal movements in Cleveland, including the suffrage cause. She co-operated with Mrs. Stockwell in the difficult task of interviewing candidates for public office. She was president of the Board of the Woman's Hospital. Mrs. Stage was impatient of discriminations against women in all fields." This photograph comes from the League of Women Voters of Ohio Collection. The League of Women Voters was first formed at the national level in early 1920 by Carrie Chapman Catt, President of the National Woman Suffrage Association. Soon, additional leagues began to form at the state and local level, with the League of Women Voters of Ohio being organized in May 1920 in Columbus. The League was first formed to empower women to use their newfound right to vote, and today its primary purpose remains citizen education. To this goal, it supports voter registration efforts, provides information on candidates and issues, sponsors debates and offers publications on public policy and voter engagement topics. Description: This illustration depicts the Bacon Building at the Academy of Medicine, which was founded on the northwest corner of Walnut and Sixth Streets in Cincinnati. The illustration appears in "The Cincinnati Journal of Medicine, Centennial Issue," published in 1957. Cincinnati physicians established the Academy of Medicine in 1857. It served primarily as a social and educational club for local physicians. Members met together to share knowledge, to establish standards for medical education, and to debate medical treatments for various illnesses affecting the community. The Academy of Medicine has continually operated since the 1850s. In 2003, the organization provided local residents with a physician's referral service, public lecturers, and health information telephone line. The Academy of Science, which originally only allowed men to join, eventually formed a women's auxiliary. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This engraving is an oval portrait of James Henry Salisbury, M.D. (1823-1905), a physician who specialized in the study and treatment of infectious diseases. Salisbury has wavy hair and a substantial beard. The subject's signature is located at the bottom center of the white border. The engraver's name and location are printed underneath the image ("Samuel Sartain, Phila."). Salisbury was born in Scott, New York, on January 12, 1823. He graduated from Albany Medical College in 1850 and practiced his medical specialty in New York and later in Cleveland, Ohio. A pioneer in the germ theory of disease, he became very interested in the relationship between diet and illness. He experimented with diets, using himself and other healthy individuals as subjects. He served as a physician during the American Civil War and treated soldiers suffering from intestinal ailments with a diet of coffee and minced beef patties thereafter known as "Salisbury steak." In 1864 Salisbury moved to Cleveland, where he helped establish the Charity Hospital Medical College. He was the author of many books and articles; among his best-known works is "The Relation of Alimentation and Disease" (1888). Between 1858 and 1861, Salisbury and his older brother, Charles Babock Salisbury, researched the earthworks and mounds of the Ohio Valley. In 1862-63 the brothers presented the American Antiquarian Society with their findings (charts, maps, sketches). James Salisbury died in Dobbs Ferry, New York, on September 23, 1905 and was buried in Cleveland, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.
