Description: This is a picture of the front porches and signs of the Golden Lamb Hotel in Lebanon, Ohio. The hotel is located at the corner of Broadway and Main Street. A wooden sign hanging from the second story has a lamb painted in the center and reads in cursive script "Golden / Lamb / Hotel." On the first floor there is another sign, reading "Famous since 1815 as the / GOLDEN LAMB / And the oldest Inn still / operating as a hotel in Ohio. / Here JQ Asams, Henry Clay, / Chas Dickens and many other / famous men have stayed. / NOW A MODERN HOTEL" The Golden Lamb, formerly the old Lebanon House, is the oldest hotel in the state of Ohio. Established by Jonas Seaman in 1803, the hotel was a success and became known for its quality food and lodging. Two years later the Warren County courthouse was built across the street, increasing the business of the Golden Lamb. The tavern served as a meeting place for troops during the War of 1812 and as a stagecoach stop during the nineteenth century. The present day, four-story building was built in 1815 during the rebuilding of the inn. The inn has had many famous guests such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and twelve U.S. Presidents. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This "Burma Shave" sign, photographed by Joe Munroe after a sleet storm in 1947, represents a forgotten and slower time in America. The sign, along with its five companions, made up one complete advertisement for Burma Shave. The signs in order read ""Does your husband/Misbehave/Grunt and Grumble/Rant and Rave/Shoot the brute/Some Burma Shave."" Joe Munroe was able to capture this moment in time, before postwar freeway reconstruction eliminated this clever type of sign. Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows a street sign in Akron, Ohio, which reads "Don't Jaywalk, You May Live Longer" in English, Italian, and German. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption reads "Marker erected by the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce on the site of the Yeatman's Tavern, Cincinnati, Ohio, now occupied by the Cincinnati Union Bethel Building, 308 East Front Street, 60 feet East of Sycamore Street. Marker erected by Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce Historic Sites Committee" Yeatman's Tavern, the Square and Compass, was a large two and a half story frame building facing Front Street.
